With the CDC estimating that 50% of people will acquire HPV in their lifetime, the odds are pretty high that if you or your sexual partner have already been exposed to HPV and may be contagious, whether they know it or not. About 10% of women who are exposed to the HPV (with strains being labeled as simply genital warts) having the internal warts turning to cancerous legions that require various types of surgeries and other painful procedures to treat and limit the damage in the vagina – it’s a pretty serious issue. When I first started reading the news story about this new HPV study, I had thought I was reading about another vaccine that may be able to be used for men, not the case, but it does appear that this vaccine treatment is very effective in treating women for the harsh HPV after they have been exposed to it.

Mature swingers more risky than prostitutes for STDs
I read this news story recently that talks about a study done where they found more sexually transmitted diseases in a group of mature swingers than they do on average in a similar size group of prostitutes. I am not a big fan of tantalizing headlines that make people believe something at a glance, and I am less fond of stories that do not explain the study’s details. I do however think that anything that can be done to raise awareness about STD or STI risks is generally a good thing.

Nurses union wants sex off the care menu
I read an article today that had me thinking outside the box. I challenge myself to think outside the box whenever I read any news article. I think many people read a headline and make a judgment, some people read a story and automatically agree with the people quoted in it, the facts presented in it or the news author’s slant on it. I try not to do that, and this story I read today about a nurse’s union trying to make it so that sex is not an option with nursing care is a great example.
